2007-2008 PMI Programs: Call for Presentations

 

The Pittsburgh PMI Chapter is looking for presenters for the 2007-2008 program year.  Presentations would be for the chapter meetings, Healthcare LIG, Financial Services LIG, and the IT LIG.

Each presentation should be approximately 45 minutes in length, with about 15 minutes for questions.  Each presenter receives 5 PDUs.

Please let us know of anyone that has been a great presenter that you would like to see at one of our meetings.  Please contact Sandra Williams, VP Programs, at programs@pittsburghpmi.org.

Meetings are normally held the second Thursday of the month at the Engineering Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP) building, located at

Reservations should be made by 4:00 PM on Monday the week of the meeting which will be the second Monday of the month.  Reservations may be made via email to Mike Gaetano at m.gaetano@eswp.com or alternatively you may telephone (412) 261-4300.

In the email please provide your name as you want it to appear on the name tag, indicate that you are, or are not, a member of the Pittsburgh Chapter, and a telephone number where you can be reached during the business hours.

You may include in your email the names of associates or guests that may also be attending with you, and provide the same name tag and affiliation information.

Financial Services LIG

Title: Case Studies for Managing Complex, Integrated Projects in Today's Nuclear Renaissance

Speakers: Bruce Rarig, PE, PMP, Jeff Joyce and Kara Prentice

Abstract: Geographical boundaries, multiple time zones, cultural differences, language barriers and virtual teams... Project managers leading complex, integrated projects routinely face many of these challenges and more.

Westinghouse Electric Company, a global organization and leading provider of fuel, services, technology, plant design, and equipment for the commercial nuclear electric power industry is experiencing significant growth in response to the resurgence of nuclear power as a viable energy source.

Nearly 50 percent of the nuclear power plants in operation worldwide, and nearly 60 percent in the United States, are based on Westinghouse technology. The greater than 10,000 employees of Westinghouse Electric Company continue to pioneer value-added engineering and services that create success for utilities in their increasingly demanding markets.

Join us for the June 12th Financial SIG session where three Westinghouse project managers will share Case Studies for Managing Complex, Integrated Projects and their experiences leading project teams through today's nuclear renaissance.

Presenter's Biographies:

Bruce Rarig, PE, PMP, Program Manager, Westinghouse Electric Company

Bruce Rarig has 22 years of experience managing projects to upgrade operating commercial nuclear power plants, both domestic and international. He is currently managing a 4-year, $85M, turnkey project to replace the reactor vessel heads at a two-unit nuclear power plant site in Texas.

Bruce's educational background includes PMP certification since 1998, an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh in 1992, Licensed Professional Engineer in PA since 1987 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Lehigh University in 1981.

Jeff Joyce, Project Manager, Component Projects Westinghouse Electric Company

Jeff Joyce has 22 years of experience managing large multi-functioned organizations and projects within the International Commercial Nuclear Power industry. His most recent project required management of research and development, design, qualification and implementation of a first of a kind repair utilizing resources, facilities and organizations spanning three continents.

Jeff's educational background includes an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh in 1995 and Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1985.

Kara Prentice, Senior Marketing Engineer, Nuclear Engineering Marketing Westinghouse Electric Company

Kara Prentice has 16 years of technical, project management and marketing experience with Westinghouse Electric Company and the nuclear power industry. She has demonstrated successful project management of Westinghouse Nuclear Engineering Services and Field Services projects, most recently serving as the Deputy Project Manager for the $9.4M replacement pressurizer project at Arkansas Nuclear One Unit 2.

Kara is a Certified Project Manager in the Westinghouse Project Excellence Program and a Senior Project Manager Candidate in the Westinghouse Project Manager Development Program.

Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Marietta College in 1991 and a Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Environmental Science and Management from Duquesne University in 2000. She is preparing to take the PMI Project Management Professional certification exam in 2008.

Speaker:Frederick A. Arnold, PMI Fellow, PMP®, Director-At-Large, Project Management Institute, Inc.

Presenter's Biography: Fred Arnold from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, USA, has been active in PMI for more than 25 years and is co-founder of the PMI Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, Chapter and co-founder/chair of the PMI Pittsburgh Chapter's IT (information technology) SIG (Specific Interest Group) and PMO Roundtable. He is a PMI Fellow and Distinguished Service Award recipient.

Mr. Arnold serves as vice president/general manager for Le, Arnold & Associates, LLC, an international project management and IT consulting services firm with a primary focus to government clients. He provides project management subject matter expertise to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies for key IT projects and programs.

In his professional career, Mr. Arnold has held a comprehensive focus on the application of project management principles to the development and implementation of owners' management controls, corporate compliance, governance, risk management, processes and standards, Enterprise Portfolio Oversight and Reporting and business unit interface.

Mr. Arnold's 35 plus years experience spans project management delivery, consulting service operations management, offshore services management, regulatory affairs and management consulting to clients' executive management and senior staff. He has led the implementation of owners' management controls on several mega projects ($2 billion to $4.565 billion/US) and numerous large projects. His clients have been in the energy, IT, engineering-construction, environmental remediation, manufacturing, chemical-process, financial services and transportation industries and regional, state and federal governmental agencies.

Mr. Arnold performs owner's oversight of Big 4, global, national, and specialty service firms to ensure satisfactory performance. Currently, he performs program management and management consulting for the U.S. Transportation Security Administration Information Technology Division.

Mr. Arnold holds the Project Management Professional (PMP®) credential. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, USA
